Didn't buy one and likely won't. Spent time on the Elise board and there was a poll... "would you recommend buying one to a friend?"
70% said No.
The owners said they loved their car but the Lotus company was horrible to deal with. With that combined with service issues and no cargo space for weekend trips etc. I put the thumb down.

Pretty amazing that folks are that influenced by Lotus' attitude. I mean, Mikey's point is interesting. Despite a large number of us having "issues" with Honda dealers or corporate to one degree or another, who wouldn't recommend the S?
Very interesting.
Anyway, John, probably best that that obsession is past. Still, I hope to drive one of those beasts someday. 1900 pounds!!!!
My guess is that the people buying the new Elise are forgetting that it's not a Porsche or a Mercedes or something equally mainstream. Lotus is not now, nor has it ever been a mainstream company. They build supremely niche cars for a very focused niche. I think the relatively low price and the targeted competition probably distracted a number of people enough to get them to part with their money without thinking it through.
I'd be interested to hear what the specific gripes are about the Elise. I imagine one of them is that Lotus dealers are few and far between. Luckily for me, if I ever decided to get a Lotus, the dealer is not much further away than the local Honda dealer.
I think their gripes are far more significant and universally felt that those I hear here. ('hear here' ... :chuckle: )
For instance many were promised a car in early in '04 but no cars became available for most until LATE 'o4... AND Lotus raised the price $3K for all cars invoiced after Sept... in other words you'd put a deposit on a car for 39K and had to pay 42 if you still wanted it when it finally got delivered... 6-9 months late!
