Houdini was the first magician to perform the "Vanishing Elephant" on stage.
Here's how Walter Gibson, Houdini's biographer, describes the presentation:
Two men wheel a large cabinet onto the stage. They open the doors and show that the cabinet is empty.
Houdini walks on stage, leading the elephant. He puts the elephant into the cabinet, then closes the doors. He opens the doors, and the elephant is gone.
Forty-three men wheel the cabinet off the stage.
