One of my coworkers had a "pet" pig. His wife wouldn't let him slaughter it, until she was too old to be of much use. By then, all he could get out of her was sausage. Such a shame - there is nothing better than a pile of bacon...
Not to be an ass or anything, but what always irritated me about some vegetarians was that they would eat fish. It sounds dumb, I know, but most meat (derived from cows, pigs, poultry, etc) comes from animals that were bred, fed, and slaughtered in a relatively humane way, expressly for the purpose of eventual human consumption. But fish are pulled from the ocean, with no regards to natural balance and maintaining healthy populations of fish, and with little concern about other inhabitants of the ocean. Last time I checked, slaughtering a cow to make steaks didn't kill anything except the cow...
