james, that's not necessarily true
as long as you have the grunt to get up to that speed rather quickly
for example, in my latest EVO magazine, the feature article is something like "200mph on the street"
they take 5 cars to see if they can hit 200mph on the autobahn
a twin-engine 700+hp audi tt
415hp RS4-engined elise
ruf rturbo
pagani zonda c12s
tvr tuscan s
anyway, the Ruf would go from 60-180mph in as short as 30sec

Assuming a straight line acceleration "curve", 60-180 in 30 seconds takes 1 mile ..... add to that, let's say, a further 1 mile to get to 271 (very low estimate I think).
In the same article they also said that from 200mph they needed about 1/2 a mile in which to stop !!!! ..... add that to the 2 miles to get up to that speed .... we are already looking at 2 1/2 miles or 4km which is longer than just about any commercial runway in the world ......

that's what Nardo, or that 7.5mi oval I mentioned, are for!
but i guess if the vehicle can hit 271mph in the first place, it has the grunt to get there at an insanely quick rate, i.e. jet-engined stationwagons, or cars strictly designed for the salt flats.
no 'normal' street car would be capable of such speeds...

btw, a year or 2 ago, Gil de Ferran set the top speed record for a closed circuit. i believe it was on the banked oval at Atlanta, where he recorded an official top speed of 241mph...
in his Honda, of course
