there's a difference between compression and sampling rate. CD's have a lower sampling rate than DVDs but are not compressed. That's why an 80 minute CD fits 80 minutes unless you overburn.

You're saying lossy compessed?
Well, technically, downsampling is technically not compression in the traditional sense.

It's compression in the virtual sense, that is to say, yes, the file is smaller. However, it's smaller not by actual change of bit word, but by resampling the whole at a lower bit rate. So, it's lossless "after a fashion."

. . . I had to think about that for a second. Good question.

hence you don't get the overtones and what not on a CD the 'color' that those vinyl guys go nuts over. it's 'close enough' for me... but i can substantially hear the difference on compressed files...

everyone has a different ear. I love my ipod, and its cool, I can't remeber my exact settings, but its pretty tame compression, meaning close to the best audio you can get...

if I want to sit and be uptight about quality I got that Technics 5 disc carousel *best CD player design EVER*

good stuff all around.

there's a quote in there for you mikey... let's see if you can find it...

Uncompressed files on the iPod do sound pretty tasty.
