Last night was also Lunar Perigee which means the moon was closer than usual and actually closer than it has been (or will be) for 18 years since it's the end of the 18 year lunar saros (a cycle of moving closer and further from the moon.)
Look a the top pic in this link. That's the difference between the way the moon looks at perigee and apogee.
