Exposure to `finger' in chili would pose little risk, official says

ORIGIN OF OBJECT REMAINS A MYSTERY

By Chuck Carroll and Sandra Gonzales

Mercury News

County health officials said today that there would be minimal danger to the public if a foreign object found in a bowl of restaurant chili turns out to be a human finger, as the customer who found it fears.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office declined to say whether it had determined the nature of the object, which was purchased at the Wendy's fast-food restaurant on Monterey Road in San Jose on Tuesday night.

A spokeswoman for the office referred calls to the San Jose Police Department, where spokesman Enrique Garcia said he had no new information this morning.

Wendy's spokesman Joe Desmond called the incident an ``unsubstantiated claim.'' ``Food safety is of utmost importance to us,'' he said in a statement. ``We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It's important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by our customers and our If the object turns out to be human in origin, the Medical Examiner's Office would be responsible for trying to determine whether any kind of crime had occurred, said Ben Gale, director of the Santa Clara County Department of Environmental Health.

If it is human, Gale said after consulting with the county's chief public health officer, Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, the danger to people from exposure to it would be ``slim to none.''

``Cooking and preparation would pretty much take care of any germs, bacteria or other danger,'' Gale said.

Gale said the investigation would attempt to trace back the object to its origin, and would work with federal authorities to do so if the probe determines the meat or other ingredients came from somewhere other than California.

It is important that any food with foreign objects or substances be removed from the market, he said. Gale added that the woman who bought the chili told investigators she didn't actually put the object in her mouth.

Devina Cordero, 20, was with her boyfriend at the Wendy's fast food restaurant at 1405 Monterey Road Tuesday night when she said the woman, who has not been identified, began gasping and ran up to her saying: ``Don't eat it! Look, there's a human finger in our chili.'' Cordero said the object appeared cooked and seemed to have a long fingernail at the end. All three people soon became sick.

``We went up to the counter and they told us it was a vegetable,'' Cordero said. ``The people from Wendy's were poking it with a spoon.'' Garcia said Tuesday that the object as ``some sort of small mass which appeared to have a fingernail. It's a small piece.''

Officials: Object found in chili is finger

ORIGIN REMAINS A MYSTERY

By Dan Reed, Chuck Carroll and Sandra Gonzales

Mercury News

Santa Clara County health officials this afternoon confirmed an object found in a bowl of restaurant chili is a human finger.

During a 2:30 p.m. press conference, they said they aren't sure whose finger it is. But they plan to trace the ingredients in the Wendy's chili back to the sources in an effort to track down where the finger came from.

The inch and a half long finger tip was allegedly found in a bowl of chili purchased Tuesday night at a Wendy's restaurant on Monterey Road in San Jose.

Wendy's could not be immediately reached for comment following the press conference.

But earlier the fast-food chain sent out a statement.

``Food safety is of utmost importance to us,'' spokesman Joe Desmond said in a statement. ``We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It's important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy's we plan to do right by our customers."

``The people from Wendy's were poking it with a spoon.''
