I knew Z3s had their batteries in the rear, but I didn't know that applied to all 3-series cars. Have you figured out what was wrong with the battery? Was it very hot that day, perhaps?
The day was pretty hot and the car was parked in the sun (no shade available). The battery was COMPLETELY dry ... no acid/water in it at all, which, I am reliably informed, was why it exploded!!

To add to the misery, Friday was a public holiday here, but fortunately, I phoned the place that I bought the car through and they came out, put a new temporary battery in (because the one that they brought with them didn't fit!!). They took it and got a brand new battery fitted, and didn't charge me a cent That's what I call good service !!

Did it spray battery acid all over the place? That could be problematic.
The battery was completely dry, Muz, no acid to spray round the boot (trunk)

I know that when I started driving you had to check the fluid levels in batteries regularly, and I had to charge the battery in my Mini probably every couple of weeks because it didn't hold its charge too well. But I thought that batteries were now maintenance free .... I have never checked a battery in any car I've had in the last 10 years

We went out for the day with friends ... parked down at a beach called "Big Wave Bay" when we got back to the car I put the key in the ignition to start the car, in order to put the hood (roof) down and there was a LARGE explosion from the rear of the car, actually making the rear of the car lift slightly.

After a couple of minutes checking under the bonnet (hood) we went and opened the boot (trunk) to see smoke all over the place. Checked the battery and it had exploded completely. The plastic casing had cracks and holes all over it

Didn't have a camera with me, so couldn't get pics of the battery, but I have never seen anything quite like that happen to a battery before!!

That happened to me in my 1989 ford aerostar eddie bauer edition with the manual transmission and tow package. Very exciting.

I was VERY relieved to see that there was no acid around .... the location of the battery would have made it very difficult to get rid of the acid had it leaked any !!
