Default My car exploded on Friday .......

We went out for the day with friends ... parked down at a beach called "Big Wave Bay" when we got back to the car I put the key in the ignition to start the car, in order to put the hood (roof) down and there was a LARGE explosion from the rear of the car, actually making the rear of the car lift slightly.

After a couple of minutes checking under the bonnet (hood) we went and opened the boot (trunk) to see smoke all over the place. Checked the battery and it had exploded completely. The plastic casing had cracks and holes all over it

Didn't have a camera with me, so couldn't get pics of the battery, but I have never seen anything quite like that happen to a battery before!!

I knew Z3s had their batteries in the rear, but I didn't know that applied to all 3-series cars. Have you figured out what was wrong with the battery? Was it very hot that day, perhaps?

Did it spray battery acid all over the place? That could be problematic.
