Wow, brant IS a man of many talents.
Personally I use a combination of Stan's and slime, but not for 700c tires. I carry a tube and a mini roll of duct tape for that very situation. Also to patch sidewalls, unfortunately spech bastages don't use UV stabilizers.
I think WSB was refering to a nail that went laterally along the tread portion? That would take my trusty leatherman.

Someone didn't read back. 
INTJ, the nail was bent in a U shape and went through the tube in multiple places and the tire in two places. Definitely pliers/Leatherman territory. And I never saw it.
