Well, it wouldn't have been a big deal if I wasn't the weakest human alive.

I struggled with the rusty nail (which had punctured the tube 3 times and lodged itself firmly in the tire) for 15 minutes before resorting to plan B, calling for a ride.
Duct tape...you can tear off about 12" of it and "roll" it into a square. Tear off what you need for a temp patch. Also, a Clif or PowerBar wrapper and some gum will sometimes work...though duct tape is a far better solution.

Of course, you could just avoid the nail in the first place...

Brant, I had a spare tube and everything... the nail was the problem. Without getting it out, it would have punctured the tube again. It took two needle nose plyers to bend it in a manner that made it extractable.

I'm assuming the nail was bent...so I would have taken the tire all the way out...beat it with my shoe or a rock (my shoes have very stiff soles...good hammer) to straighten it...pulled the nail (with my teeth, because I'm a tough guy)...and put the wrapper inside the tire as a puncture liner...

I guess I just need to focus on avoiding the nail.
