To be fair, the rate of defective births among first cousins is a lot lower than what people think it is. The rate is comparable to a woman having a child in their late 30s-early 40s (like 95-96% healthy vs 97-98% for a normal couple). And I don't think anybody deems that to be morally wrong.
It's just another one of those things that society has blown up out of proportion to be a bigger deal than it is. Like all those killer bees that were supposed to invade us a while back.

I saw it on ABC news a couple months back... there was some dateline-ish reporter with a mustache who did a piece on the topic. John-something-a-rather. It was quite interesting!
I think Colbert/Stewart made fun of it too at the time...
