funny story 4 ya dave .... we owned a beater Buick wayyyyyyyy back it was the ugliest thing but was cheap
we kinda have an on going joke of " we could get a Buick "
so along w / the Buick as in will never buy is Cadilac
we may be old but not going there
also we've only leased a vehicle once and I feel its a mistake as its like renting vs purchasing your place your just throwing that $ away NO disrespect to your Mom RIP
we had a salesman try to push a lease on us yesterday & I immediately said NOPE no Lease
I do like your seeing that GM type cars vs JDM are fine if its what you like
Were retired & not rich so what ever it ends up being it will like I said just be fairly new not a ton of miles and get an extended warranty
Mom only leased it because was it was a good deal, and it was in her budget. She could have paid for it full (and I & my sister) tried to talk her into buying it but Mom was stubborn about it.
Try one out - it’s a really good car for around 32.5k and the Enclave is a little bigger for around 5k more.
Have you considered electrics? There are some crazy cheap lease deals right now (as well as some crazy good sale promos).
The Chevy Blazer EV is really sharp looking and has some good lease options right now. The VW ID4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6 are smaller hatch/CUV sized and have good leases. And the Polestar 2 which is a weird not-a-sedan-not-an-SUV shape has had some ridiculously cheap leases. They're all 24-27 months so it just punts the decision a couple years when you can try something else.
If you're not big on leasing, Ford has a plethora of 0% loan options for the not-a-Mustang Mach-E. 72 month 0% on 2023 models (of which there are many available).
In all seriousness I'm obviously a keep-my-cars-way-too-long person (I have owned a grand total of 6 cars in the last 30 years and owned 3 of them simultaneously), but some of these lease deals were so good I was contemplating selling my Focus before shit starts to break on it.
Also I wanted to point out the "throwing away money" thing is bogus. All cars are throwing away money. It's not an investment (at least not the shitboxes we drive).
$400/mo to lease a $40k car for 2 years = $10k to drive a car for 2 years, not put a penny into it maintenance wise, walk away.
vs
Buy a $40k car on a 5 year 0% loan, $16k in payments, make sure it's well maintained so you can sell it, and the car is worth, if you're lucky, the $24k you still owe when you sell it. So, more dollars.
Buying only makes sense if you plan to keep a car for well into the terms of the loan.

YOU buy one

I can SO hear your voice saying PITA power
OK I'm glad you found this BB and I read all your pages figures you'd have such an involved input :car/engineerbrain:
Let me 1st mention to you that this is not just MY vehicle $hit if I was gonna still have a vehicle the Cayman S wouldn't have left the geeeerage but yeah we go everywhere together and C-6 if you read back now sadly has issues with the LOW sitting cars which is why the Cayman S is gone..... it was mostly sitting in the garage which is / was dumb IMO
He also is not caring to go electric I am not defiantly against it but not in a hurry to either, but do love some of those E cars you mentioned!
As for the Leasing dealio well yeah you of course make sense but were paying cash and not gonna do either a lease or a loan.
We came close to bringing home a VW ATLAS yesterday that was owned by one of the salesclerks Mom and was IMACULATE very nic w / leather etc.... came down to the person C-6 calls GOD that she had to go to for the final approval blowing it when we had an amount and he insisted he needed 2K more theres many a out there we can catch so we walked
The tack ons they try to pull are its like WHY put a Price Tag on your ad if its gonna end up being 2 -3 K higher in the end
Thats what I do like about Carmax is their prices are the price you see NO haguling although maybe they set them a lil higher also the 10 day return is a benefit as NO dealership is gonna give you that.
Understood on electric, it's definitely not for everyone. Wasn't sure with the new house if you had a 240 line in the garage where you could put a good charger. Since you typically will start the day 100% charged, the only real drawback is that long road trips are a PITA to manage your juice.
And, yeah, I'm not going to tell you and Skip how to manage your dollars, but there are some killer deals right now. Lots of 0% and 1.9% promo loans going around (with savings accounts paying 3.5-4.5%... free money!).
As for dealer tactics, well, some things never change. It's wild how shady some of the places are. You have the power (dollars), walk away. 3 years ago dealers could gouge and tack on BS fees, and I think many of them just assumed that was always going to be the case.
