You could never possibly collect every single gun that is out there.

So you just give up and don't try ????

If they were ALL illegal, it would certainly make it easier to know who should and who shouldn't be in possession of one !

IMO the best way to deal with gun crimes would be extremely strict penalties. You know all the arguments like if all guns were illegal then only outlaws would have them etc. You have to be practical and come up with a solution that will get the criminals off the streets and keep them off. If all guns became illegal tomorrow what's to stop me from stashing a few out in my yard?

Of course there is nothing to stop you stashing a few away ......

BUT a HUGE percentage of the guns would be removed from circulation, and it would be clear that anyone in possession of one was committing an offence, for which you could have a stiff penalty, thus reducing significantly gun related crimes .....

Didn't they ban automatic weapons in the US ? This was after they had been available ....

I think banning guns now is near impossible, if not outright impossible, not because it's not physically feasible to carry out such a ban, but because of the mentality of the general public here. Just my two cents.

Agreed it would be a good start, but I still don't think it would be enough ..... people don't need guns, the world is changing and it is time that people recognised that fact .....

It would take at least one generation Jack for the ban to really work, but people burying their heads in the sand just saying, it won't work means that another and another generation will pass without anything being done ......

It took probably 2 generations in the UK for drink driving laws to really make an impact on people because it was so ingrained into society that people just carried on anyway ..... but over time, it has now become much less of a problem ..... it just takes time ....

To seriously answer your question asdff I don't think parents should own guns. If there is a gun in the house then the odds are obviously much greater that a child can find it and shoot himself or another with it than if there were no gun at all. For the people who counter that they need a gun to protect their family I say they should learn how to protect i.e. fight with their hands and body as these weapons are always with you. If someone breaks into your house while you are sleeping you are not going to be able to defend yourself with a gun unless you sleep with it next to you loaded every night. If someone pulls a gun on you you are not going to be able to move to get your gun at that point either.

I agree with robb ......

To keep the gun accessible and useful for yourself, you by default make it accessible and useful to others.
