rant! clueless receptionists ... grrrrr
Normally I'm excessively patient with people whose jobs are answering phones, but today I just feel like blowing some steam. I call this company that just moved. I know their old phone numbers still work, but am not sure if their old fax number still works. The receptionist answers the phone. I say, "Hi, I need to fax something over. Does the old fax number still work?" She says, "Hold on, let me go check the fax machine," and puts me on hold.
Still on hold about 5 minutes later, I decided to write this post. I mean, WTF is she going to learn by going to look at the
ing fax machine???? I haven't sent the fax yet!!! I am continually amazed at the low level of intellect that pervades our society - more accurately, the low level of common
ing sense.

Here, the fax machine number is printed clearly on the top of the fax machine. So, if you were unsure of the number, you could go look. If the number had changes, etc., there would be a note on the machine.
On the other hand, it has never taken me 5 minutes to check it out, especially when I know someone is waiting to hear back from me.

The name of my company is below. My last name is Johnson. There's a very weird, highly statistically reliable phenomenon associated with Athanor. I'll call and leave a message with a receptionist/secretary and make sure she spells the company name correctly. (No one can understand it, remember it, spell it, or prounounce it.) 24 out of 25 times she'll come back and say "What was your last name again?" Not "What was your name?" "What was the number?" or anything else. They always, when forced to focus hard on a really unusual name like Athanor, unconsciously zoom away from a really common name like Johnson. It's really weird.
