To think that, against the mayor and the governor's own wishes, they wanted to start shipping people back into N.O. in a week! The entire medical system of the city...once 12 hospitals...is completely wiped out. What a ridiculous mess we've voted ourselves into!

I'm sorry, but the Department of Homeland Security is one of the biggest mistakes we have ever made on a government level. It's basically glorified window dressing to cover up the cracks in the glass from pre-9/11 failings of our existing national security infrastructure, but has been given the task of delegating, organizing and facilitating so many aspects of our national emergency and relief systems that they don't know what to do with themselves. When the Mississippi River flooded repeatedly, pre-Dubya, were there ever any serious, nationwide criticisms of FEMA's lack of initiative? No..... Why? because FEMA had the ability to operate on its own, independent of an ambiguous overloard, required to call the shots, adding 13 more steps to the process of mobilizing any effort.... To say nothing of the fact that, at the time, FEMA wasn't in the hands of an unqualified, lying, BOOB!

Looks like the east (and worst) side of Rita might hit Lafayette. We'll at leat get tropical storm force winds and a bunch of rain. We might be evacuating, not sure yet. Will decide in the next 24 hours.
