Interestingly, one of the things that got me into a Miata before the S2000 was the very same realizations you just mentioned. Given that I only spent $6k originally for the car w/ hardtop for the track and Koni struts AND racing wheels tires (in retrospect, should have kept them around a little longer), it doesn't really bother me TOO much when I have to dump money into repairs or upgrades...
true.dat

I actually learned a lot more about damping/spring rates/roll rate/bounce frequency etc etc over the last couple months deciding what to put underneath this thing. Very exciting. Plus what I"ve seen is they are fairly reliable and robust. My 1.6 has 120k on it and starts idles and pulls strong. A little quirky but expected for it's age imo.

you have a roll bar no?

I'll snap some in the next couple days of the current state of the car. The interior was easy to remove...the inner fender liner was more a function of getting ripped out during the latest accident...so I tore it the rest of the way out. The others will likely follow when I have the springs off to install the Ground Control spring perches and new coils...

what springs? i'm still deciding on how far to rip out the interior. I'm considering selling the X to keep this and I'm pretty sure I can live with driving around in a race car

speaking of seats I meant to ask what you are running? I've seen a couple momo that sit nice and low.

I'm looking at the Boss Frog double hoop. I like that look and I guess it actually passes SCCA whatever whatever.

I have the Hard Dog Hard Core Double Diagonal rollbar. Does a VERY nice job of stiffening up the car...not to mention the safety factor if you get a low enough seat to get your melon under the bar...

As for reliability, other than accelerated wear from time on the track (and autocross by previous owner), I'm quite happy with the reliability of this little lump of metal.
oh yeah. previous post.

I purchased the Ground Control perches w/ Eibach springs in whatever their stock rate for Miata's is. It's roughly 4x the rate of stock...well matched to the Koni's I'm running. I've had the springs/perches for a couple years, but keep forgetting to install them!

My passenger seat is a stock seat w/ 6 pt harness. My driver's seat is a Momo Cup w/ custom fixed mount to get it as low as possible and a 5 pt harness (I usually just run the lap belt on the street, because I'm lazy).

I've seen pics of the Boss Frog and if you like it and it meets specs...go for it. I HIGHTLY recommend an aftermarket rollbar for safety AND stiffness.

word. it bugs me out not having the roll bar. not that the S's bars would do anything at all...

I have 440 front and 325 rear, the hollow bar front, stock rear, and koni's. I'm very excited. waiting on bumpstops and bushings.

I have a new toy

I'll have more ?'s I'm sure.

what year is yours?

I have a GIGANTIC Performance Techniques front bar that I need to loosen up a bit.

GC spring rates are 375 & 250.

Mine is a 92...with a 90 rear diff (pulverized the original one) and a rebuilt engine with parts ranging from 1990 to 2006...

Oh yeah, I also HIGHLY recommend the ACT clutch. A bit noisier than stock, but works like a champ...even if you're slipping the clutch driving hills all day...
