I just realized that I assume that Japan is on a "western" calender.... do they also have there own calender???

The Japanese follow the western calendar .... though they do have one strange thing .... years are counted from when the last Emperor took the throne .... so the year at the moment is 15 (plus some Kanji to tell you which Emperor) and the year I was born was 43 !!!! Yup, pretty confusing, but I guess it would make you learn your history about the Emperors !!!

I know very little about Japan really, even after 3 1/2 years here .... the main thing that I have learnt is how not to offend the Japanese when you need to turn down an invitation, or disagree with what someone says ..... respect for elders (in most situations) especially at work is extreme here though !!!!

seems like a good thing..... mostly.... how does it work out in practice, are Japanese people in general as annoying as americans????
