No, cake itself is pretty bland so you're suppose to combine them. In my opinion at least.

Bonus:
But I knew a guy who loved german chocolate cake, but he only ate the cake. Not the frosting. It confused me because Ther german part is the frosting, otherwise it's just chocolate.
But he said it infuses duruing the bake.
