Default semi-official HDTV thread? (attn: mikey)

so I'm thinking I might do the thing this year, since I said to myself, "Self, when your super secret favorite movie of all time comes out in HD on some kind of disc object, you will obey your inner consumer and buy an HDTV, and also some kind of disc object playing device."

so, I've seen images of the full size HD version of said movie and after cleaning all of the bricks out of my pantaloons, I started doing some research.

I know mikey recently went through this painful birth.

what gives?

What size tv does your consumer self crave? Is Teletubbies on BluRay or HD-DVD?

I recommend Samsung or Sony LCD HDTVs. I'd stay away from plasma (burn-in on newer models is not as much of an issue anymore, but ghosting still is).

Must haves:
*1080p
*HDMI ports

I was led to believe the 1080P hype is just that..hype and up-sell...

Stick with a progressive scan model and side by side you cant tell the difference in a blind test....well of course you would be blind and would not be able to tell.

1080p is progressive???

There is a huge visual difference between 720 and 1080 sets. At your local store they may look the same because quite often they're not feeding them a full 1080 signal. Most of the stores around here only have a 480 video signal.
