Most places that sell TVs maximize the brightness and contrast settings on their showroom TVs. It makes them look good in showrooms, by hiding any contrast ratio shortcomings.
In other words, just because it was dimmer than the other ones around it, it was probably still set too bright.

The Philips even has a showroom mode. Was that on? Most of the time when I go into stores I turn the showroom mode off.
i need to check again. my guess is that it wasn't on, it was noticeably dimmer, the last time I looked at them the thing that drew me to it was that it was almost indistinguishable from sony right next to it, brightness included. curious.
