I won't be here next week, so I'm making my picks now... based on probable results (actually, the slight chance of the 16 teams changing doesn't affect any of my picks.

Buffalo / 8 seed (Montreal) - Buffalo
New Jersey / Tampa Bay - New Jersey
Atlanta / NY Rangers - Atlanta
Ottawa / Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh

Note: If the seeds end up NJ/NYR and Atlanta/Tampa, I'm taking NJ and Tampa.

Detroit / Calgary - DeToilet
Anaheim / Minnesota - Anaheim
Vancouver / Dallas - Vancouver
San Jose / Nashville - San Jose

There's a lot of ways these seeds can get jumbled:

SJ can end up the 2 seed facing Minnesota, leaving Anaheim the 4 seed against Nashville. I'll take Nashville in that matchup, and SJ over Dallas.

Minnesota jumps over Dallas for the 6 seed and faces Vancouver. I'll take Minnesota.

I'll try to get online Sunday and update these.
All my seedings held out, so I'm sticking with my picks, even though I'd have greatly preferred another Hudson River battle versus dealing with Tampa's offense.

Thoughts from the playoffs:

The St Pete times arena is shit. Pucks bouncing off the glass in random directions, lousy ice (though Nashville had problems with their ice too), homer officiating. More proof that hockey in Florida = stupid.

I'm really disappointed in Calgary for their game 5 performance, notably the last few minutes. Glad the NHL came down hard on them.

I'm not sure if I'm more surprised at how well the Rangers played or how poorly Atlanta played.

SJ/Nashville was a great series as expected. Nashville made some moves to try to get closer to SJ in the playoffs and didn't succeed, evidently. Nabokov seems to be getting better as the season goes on. If Thornton can start shooting once in a while, SJ will give Anaheim a good run for their money.

Vancouver/Dallas is as boring as expected. 20 lousy goals in 6 games, and 9 of those were in the first game. Credit to Luongo and Turco, but teams with such pathetic offenses shouldn't be in the playoffs. Heck, the Devils (not exactly offensive minded) scored 19 goals alone in their 6 game series. I'm hoping game 7 tomorrow doesn't numb me to sleep like game 6 did (fortunately there was a NASCAR race I could flip back to - that should tell you how boring game 6 was).

The Zebras have been inconsistent. Today's Devils/Lightning game was called like a powder puff football game. Zajac gets a diving minor when he has a breakaway chance on Holmquist? Yesterday's Flames/Wings game was allowed to get out of hand by the refs; there were a lot of non-calls in the early part of the 3rd period that could have cooled things down. Interference penalties are not being called consistently, if at all. Lots of running picks, lets of obstruction in the slot, way too much running of goalies (which is only being called after certain players whine and cry to the refs).

Other than Buffalo, the top teams in the West are still much better.

My power rankings of the remaining 10 teams:

1. Anaheim
2. SJ
3. Buffalo
4. Detroit
5. NJ
6. Vancouver
7. Ottawa
8. Rangers
9. Dallas
10. Calgary
