I'm noting ability to efficiently haul hockey gear, ability to pull a car trailer, and occasionally go off road are all favorable assets.

I'm adding that a 2008 Touareg TDI has been on my wish list for a while, but that probably fails the "more reliable" part, and definitely fails the "cheaper to maintain and fix" part.
