I’m going off on tangent here. I mentioned that my coworker was found shot & killed and stuffed into a storage unit. And yes , I hate the ‘thoughts and prayers are with you’ - because that is so over used and meaningless.
I'm with you on "thoughts and prayers." You could tell them you know that nothing you can say will change how painful this is for them and that you're sorry they're having to experience this. You could also mention something about her that you appreciated (great way to keep the memory of her alive). I'd suggest avoiding any references to "staying strong" (safe bet for any death), because that often reinforces the idea that feeling (perfectly reasonable but tough) emotions is "weak."
