Indiana Officials Seek Clues in Highway Shootings
The first shooting came at about 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, killing Jerry L. Ross, 40, who was one of three passengers in a pickup truck traveling on Interstate 65 in the southeastern part of the state. Shortly thereafter another pickup was fired upon in the same area, with a bullet grazing a passenger, Robert J.O. Hartl of Audubon, Iowa. He was treated at a hospital and released.
The second set of shooting took place about two hours later on Interstate 69, near Muncie in the northeastern part of the state. A tractor-trailer and a sport utility vehicle were struck, but no one was injured.
After the shooting in I-65, the police closed a 14-mile stretch of the highway for eight hours, but said few clues had been recovered. As a result, they are asking business operating near the highway to preserve tapes from indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras so they can be examined for possible evidence.
