Sarnia is across the river from Port Huron, MI - about 50 miles north of Detroit.

Overall, it's pretty close, depending largely on where in Cleveland you meet. Also, going the Cleveland route entails taking 94 and 75 through Detroit, which will add considerable time and annoyance to the trip.

Regardless... if it means having a co-pilot by going through Cleveland, it's probably worth it.
I wonder if there would be any advantage of crossing at Niagara? I've heard that the highways around Detroit are a PITA.
If I can have a +1/someone to take over driving for part of the way, that would be cool I think.

I haven't even really thought about the trip home, except that I'll definitely take 2 days. I may tag along to Fort Fun and spend the night on Sunday. Oh so much planning!

Crossing at Niagra would get you onto I90 which goes right into Cleveland. Not sure how it'd work timewise - looks like it's a bit more distance than either Sarnia route, but it's mostly rural so you wouldn't have many slow downs.

It'd also give you some different scenery along the trip.
