It's like this schmuck that I passed on the trails earlier today. He was talking about how he's an intense downhiller and likes to push himself...yet his bike was in PRISTINE condition and I blew him away like he wasn't even pedalling...and I haven't ridden a mountain bike in THREE YEARS!!!

Posers crack me up...

That said, Ninh, I DON'T think you're a poser in the slightest and I would happily steal any of your bikes if you close your eyes for too long!

Speaking of which, I told mom to stalk you while she's down there and snag one of your bikes for me!

 

actually, so far none of my XTR components have given me any problem. My specialized is going on 9 years with all original components (except tires, grips, tubes, chain).
to be truthful, I don't really need XTR. XT is more than enough for me but I just like to be spoiled when I'm on my bike.

 

well, I'm planning to do this "Climb to Kaiser" next weekend. It's 100 miles and 7500 ft of vert elev. All in 100+ temp with no shade.

I'm hard on parts. I break stuff and hate the pricetag for XTR or Dura-Ace, so I run LX/XT and Ultegra on my bikes.

My luxury on my mountain bike was Salsa skewers...and I snapped one!

Go to your local library. Every year, "Bicycling" magazine publishes a buyer's guide that will help you with the lingo, prices, type, etc. that a beginner will need.
If you're too lazy
www.bicycling.com has it on line.
Then, wander down to your local bike shop and walk around check out the scene. In CA, there are always free publications that will list the local clubs (beginners to hardcore riders) that you can go to. Don't know about Texas.
Usu, there's always a weekend ride somewhere.

Well, I figured if I started off really basic that you might be able to give us some more info. To be honest, one of the easiest things to do is find a good local bike shop and go ask lots of questions.

 

planning on doing that this week ...it was the terminology that I really have no clue what they are saying.

 

It'll all make sense pretty quickly. Besides, if you're just getting started the fit of the bike is more important than anything else...
