My cutoff for flying has been 600 miles for as long as I can recall. Anything less than that and you're better off driving both time and cost wise. Of course, that was calculated when gas was ~ $2.50/gallon.

I know. San Fran is a bit of a stretch when you can get $250 direct round trip flights that get you there in 5 hours (including airport time).
