and briefly in regards to INTJ's claim, Mexico City actually has a highly developed health care system, and they reacted very fast, which is one action that helps to keep numbers low, keep that in mind. current official numbers:
8 dead (another 16 suspected)
257 confirmed (mexico says they have over 30 in critical condition)
hundreds more uncomfirmed ?? or maybe none eh? who knows
INT: are those numbers big enough to satisfy you? or would you like more people suffering? based on your argument i suspect the latter...
as for your data presented above, only TB is communicable, the others cannot be, or cannot be *easily* passed from person to person, which renders your argument as garbage. you *can't* catch an 'accident' or diabetes from another person. the key identifying factor of an 'epidemic' is that it SPREADS. the ONLY on you listed that is highly infectious is TB and the infection rate is and has been declining which is where you can apply your 'reverse doomsday' clock. It's actually not spreading so you fail there as well.
I say it again, I'll listen to the professionals before I *ever* listen to you. the concern is how fast it's moving, in two weeks it has spread to 11 countries, and that seems to be fast enough for the pros.

as I said before, my info comes directly from an epidemiologist, one *who is trained in and studies epidemics* not an arm chair opinionist such as yourself. you can continue your arguments, but in this case, you are simply out of your league. accept it. there is a lot to consider here, unchecked swine flu can combine/mutate with other flu, mutate on it's own, create an entirely new virus should it meet up with avian flu which is currently contained to countries with no cases of swine flu... the key here with the "hysteria" is preventing these scenarios, and you can't do that if people aren't informed. make sense yet? or will your know it all attitude prevent you from absorbing any more information?

1. Mexico in no way has a credible system, as I described and you ignored, they didn't even check or quarantine the family at the supposed initiation pt.
2. Hysteria is what it is. 8 people dead? Ordinary annual influenza kills far more people here. That's not on the news. It has nothing to do with compassion.
You want compassion, where is your compassion for the thousands who die a year in mexico from contagious and non-contagious, but readily preventable illness? How about the several thousand who died from the cartels using US guns? That is a far greater problem by any metric than the flu.
The purpose of the data was to show that using metrics for mortality demonstrate how trivially small this outbreak is. But how dramatic the public exposure is, because maybe it will actually kill someone in the US, who actually got sick here.

1. have YOU worked in the health system there? if you haven't then you don't have practical experience to draw on. I have been told otherwise by somebody who HAS worked there. Is it perfect? nothing is, not even holier than though USA health care system. once you've worked abroad in health care, THEN i'll take your OPINION seriously. I've said this before, but you still aren't getting it.
2. you're missing the point. it's about containment, not death, not news. if you actually knew
as far as compassion, i'm not the one who started up comparing death rates, that's you. you continue to miss the mark.
read it all again, int, maybe you'll be able to have a better conversation about the topic.
more likely, because you have such a petty need to win every argument you'll degenerate into name calling again.

...using US guns...
And the rest of the story.
That is 90% of all guns reported to the BATFE by the Mexican government as beeing suspected as comming from the US.
Most of the collected guns are so obviously not from the US, the Mexicans don't even bother asking BATFE to check.
A spokesman for the ATFE, Matt Allen, has now "clarified" the number and admitted that only 17% of the weapons found at crime scenes in Mexico have been traced to the U.S.
The rocket-propelled grenades, 50 caliber machine guns other advanced weapons and military equipment that the cartels have in abundance. You can't buy that stuff at gun shops in Texas or Arizona.

int, i still fail to see where your bad attitude originates from, but i'm no longer interested in struggling with it. everything i have to say, i've already said, at this point i'm only repeating myself. it's all posted in this thread, you're welcome to read it again and find new ways to rationalize your angst.
