Both the 9856 and the 9857 are downgrades from my older 9813 ...no 4 volt pre-outs anymore..and no time correction built in. to Alpine for those moves!

All the new Alpine HU have 2 volt pre-outs..the old ones had 4 volt. ..this is the amount of voltage the headunit can send to an amplifier..in theory the higher the voltage the less gain you will need on your external amps (lower gains means less noise introduced) . which again in theory will make the amps work less (have a lower noise floor) CAVEATS! ...only an issue if you are driving external amps...also most good external amps have a very low noise floor anyway so its a moot issue. ..Depends on who you ask.

The bigger deal for me (and in the S) is the missing time correction. Which is basically a fancy term for delaying the sound from one channel vs another to equalize the sound stage or to correct for other sound factors.... i.e the tweeter is separate from the mids in my car which creates havoc on your perception of imaging and stereo. Time correction can makes it sound prettier.

I sure on of the engineers could explain all this better.
