That's because it isn't jam. It's jelly.

Jelly is far more popular and available than jam is. At least in the parts of the US I've visited. Jam is often called preserves here too.

I like jam better.

The Jelly is sort of like jam without all the yummy fruit bits. Like someone making jam used WAY to much water and pectin.

Right! Jelly is called Jello. Jam is called preserves (sometimes). You don't get much jelly in the UK.... sometimes you get wine jelly don't you? Or Welch's grape jelly?

Jello, James? Now you're confusin' me. I think we call jelly the same thing... Jello is a desert, but jelly is what you spread on toast.
