I only went the Evo route because one was traded in to our dealership & I got an amazing deal. Actually, right now I am working on trading it in and purchasing a new BMW 328i sedan for my daily driver.
I purchased the Evo on May 18 with 21,500 miles. As of right now I am at approximately 31,500 miles. The car so far has been in the shop 4 times :
Blown driverside CV boot, broken lug stud, misfire in 2 cylinders, and power steering pump broke. The other day my CEL came on, however it went off the next day.
Honestly, if I could go back I would have not purchased this car. Don't get me wrong, the AWD Turbo setup is awesome for a daily driver - very easy to drive car and it is fun. However, it's worth more trouble than good.
The steering feels great, however turning radius is very crappy. The car has a lot of squeeks that make it very annoying. The seats and drivability of the car are very nice though.
All in all - STi > Evo
Ohh, and resale value sucks. I purchased it for $22,000 in May, right now if I traded it in I would only get between $18,000 - $18,500.
fck..
really..
I looked on ebay with Cheryl last night and we spotted a few EVO IX MRs for sale with basically 0 miles, and at least 3~4k off already... (maybe less at the end of the bidding). I wasn't planning on buying one anytime soon, but my friend has an '06 Sti with very little miles and he said he'd let go anytime I was interested. I heard that the Sti motor is more reliable, but I didn't realize the Evo would have so many problems
So when you say you wouldn't go the AWD/Turbo route, you mean you wouldn't get an Evo again, or not even an Sti (as the 328i would indicate).

Oh, I have no issues with the AWD Turbo setup. Honestly, I loved the Evo as a daily driver. The setup is a very simple car to drive... drive it as hard as you want in any corner and the car will just push - no real driving skill is needed.
I've had the conversation with a lot of the local Evo/STi guys, telling them their car requires no skill. The smart ones agree with me, the dumb ones don't. I then watch them spin a stock S2000 around because they can't control it and have no skill... then point to my S2000 that just made 450whp on low boost and laugh.
The AWD Turbo setup is awesome for a road course, auto-x, or even a daily driver. However if you are looking for a fun weekend car, the S2000 takes the cake hands down - no questions asked.
Before making a purchase... look through ebay and find out what they are being marketed for. Then look through some forums... I know the Evo is www.EvolutionM.net and just see what people are asking and what they are selling for. KBB says mine is worth a lot more than I can ever get for it.
Oh yeah.. I'm on evom
I definitely don't intend on replacing the S2k... (hopefully we get to keep both actually). I was just thinking that having a fun awd car with some decent power would be nice. I'm torn between Evo and Sti.. and yes, you will have Evo guys talk about no torque, no power S2k all day... it gets old... so, I figure we'll have the best of both worlds.
See..... I have a lot of Evo/Sti friends
For styling, I prefer the Evo IX over the new STi. In my opinion, the last body style STi was the best. The original WRX with the circle lights was nice, but they never offered that in the STi trim... plus it had a weak transmission and driveline.
If you are comparing brand new... the styling alone would cause me to go with an Evo IX (with warranty) over an STi.
true... IX MR was my number 1 choice...
new Sti looks funny..but I'm getting used to it... interior looks a lot better than when it first came out. i sort of like the seats in the evo better though..
but i need a car that's going to be reliable (i guess asking for an AWD/turbo reliable car is going to be tough)
Hah - well the STi has the Evo on reliability without question. Atleast that is what I have learned through a bit of research. Don't really see too many people have problems with their STi. Not as much as I have had with my EVO anyways. But perhaps I just got the bad child
