Default Coolant issue -- Askinig for help

Guys I got a coolant issue I cant figure out... So a few days ago I notice my temp at 190 - never seen past 183 on the street. Got home shut it off and the expansion tank overflowed.. Changed the rad cap and that didn't really solve the issue but it helped. Drove all day yesterday temps were from 183-189 up and down so I thought that was better but not normal. Realized I didn't have heat so I bled it this morning a few time with the front elevated a bit and got my heat back.. Took it for a quick drive and it went over 200 fast and lost heat so I again shut it off and noticed the lower hose was cold...
Any ideas?? Air pocket?? Maybe thermostat... Im reserved about changing the thermo since I drove for hours yesterday with it not passing 190 but maybe its on its way out and working and not working... I don't know

Is your water pump leaking? Are your fans kicking on?

I'd also say thermo if the above are not occurring.

How is the car running? Head gasket maybe?

Billman's going to be in the Lehigh valley this weekend. Maybe you can swing by and have him take a look.
