Default Let's play a game...

Ok, I talked to the DelVal grease monkey at dyno day about a "tapping" noise I have. I thought it might have been the TCT but he doesn't think so. It seems that the noise is loudest when the car has warmed up. At dyno day the car had been sitting for awhile so the noise wasn't that loud. I took a couple videos last night. Video quality is horrid but I was really just trying to capture the sound.

Video one starts from the front of the car. I moved slowly to the side and at one point brought the camera down towards the ground behind the front wheel. The hood is closed in video one.

Video 1

Video two is from inside the engine bay (hood open). I held the camera about 6-8 inches above the top of the motor. I flicked open the butterfly a couple times...

Video 2

I did have my retainers changed to AP2 retainers last fall by Billman. At that time he did a valve adjustment so I doubt they need to be adjusted. I sent the videos to Billman but I thought I'd see what some of you DelVal people might think.

Thanks

Had the same sound in my race car last year. We replaced the TCT, but the sound was still there. King Motorsports took it apart and found no issue with bearings, no scouring of cylinder walls, etc. I heard it could be the plastic timing chain guides wearing or possibly the timing chain stretched. We never found out what it was. The engine had catastrophic rod failure in cylinder#2 at the END of last season. We don't think the sound was related with no evidence of oil starvation, or cylinder wall/piston/valve damage in any other cylinder, etc.
Ironically enough I didn't notice the sound until after testing parts on a dyno.

I had a similar sound going on, motor scorched #1 cylinder and needed new short block installed. Can't say if there was definate connection between the 2 or not.

Thanks for the info. I actually had the noise before dyno day. The car dyno'd strong so it's not down on power. It does guzzle oil but it always has.

I'm certainly not the expert on diagnosis, my wrench skills are lacking, and I'm sure you've checked it to rule out....

valves?
