NJ I inspection help, no cat, no CEL
I am moving from Philly to NJ (sad I know), my car has a header back T1R single (very loud) but no CEL. I know at state inspection they just plug into OBD like PA and check readiness, which will be OK; but they use a mirror to check for a cat, but in reality it doesn't usually happen. What is the risk if they check? Is it worth switching exhaust to one with a test pipe? Or the work of re-installing the stock exhaust? My fear is a slammed, loud s2000 is high potential of a full, real inspection.
Give it a shot, the worst I suspect you'll get is a fail sticker and 45 days to fix it. Does NJ give tickets for tampering with emissions like California?
Unless you have a lazy inspector, like mentioned above, you'll get flagged right away. They'll smell you coming before they even look underneath. If you want to roll the dice, I suggest you go to the inspection center in the shittiest urban neighborhood you can find. Those inspectors are more accustomed to seeing the dilapidated hoopties coming through and they'll be more busy. You stand a better chance of going unnoticed.
