The American
I saw reviews for this movie that ranged from 4 stars out of old Roger Ebert to 1 star from our local paper.
First off know this, the commercials make it look like it is an action thriller. It is not. It is by far one of the slowest movies you will ever see in your life. If the opening credit sequence seems really long you are in for two hours of the same.
Now with that said, I kind of liked the movie. It was ok, and I get what the director was trying to portray but he went way over the top with it.
There is more dialogue in ten minutes of your average film then there is in this whole movie. At least 45 minuts of this movie is just a bunch of scenes that are close ups of Clooney's aging face looking puzzled or concerned, or scenes of him just walking around through a lonely grey italian village meant to symbolize his lonely existence. Calling it a plodding movie would be an understatement. The "action" scenes add up to about 3 minutes of running time.
I would guess 80% of the people in my screening hated it. 20% probably would give it faint praise and that's where I fall. Its probably a rental for you if you are desperate to see something.
The highpoint is the fetching italian prostitute, but even the many gratuitous scenes of her naked jiggly parts can't do much to keep one from falling asleep.

OK - Strangely enough, I loved it. I was likely the 1 person, or 1% that walked out thinking it was a good movie. I heard others saying that "Clash of the Titans" held the worst movie moniker prior to seeing this one... Blah Blah Blah.... The Clash of the Titans was, in fact, worst than the original and it it is on my list of craptasic cinema.
So - why did I like this movie?
First and foremost - it was exactly what the director wanted to convey. If you sit in this movie and feel unsettled and uncomfortable, you are experiencing what he (the director) wanted you to feel – which is what the main character is feeling. You want more, you want action, you want interaction… a real life or existence – the main character feels none of this either - he wants more too.
The lack of dialogue and action is precisely what you are supposed to see and feel.
Again, I loved the way it was shot, the way it was directed and the Italian prostitute was lovely even more so with her jiggly parts.
