Atkins Diet
Well, I put on lots of weight when I was unemployed and it is time to take it off. Besides daily exercise I have started the Atkins diet, which basically is a no(very low) carb diet with all proteins and fats allowable. For example, I can have a steak with sour cream, but I cannot have a slice of bread or rice or a cracker. Is anyone else doing this, I would be curious to see how it worked for anyone here. I have heard a lot of success stories with this diet. Supposedly the fat comes right off, but as with all diets, especially this one, cheating can be devastating.
If anyone wants info on this I can send you to the website, it is pretty sweet.

A few friends of mine have done this diet. As long as you're diligent, it works! The key to remember what you can and can't have is pretty much if it's white or another version of it comes in white, you can't have it.
I could never do this diet... I am a total sucker for starches of all kinds and I would die if I had to give up cheese!

I did it for a couple of weeks, the weight fell off, but I just couldn't stick to it!!!!
There is nothing to eat that will "fill you up", starches (potatoes, rice, pasta) are what you use to fill you up and satiate your appetite. Also, you may well find that you have no or very low energy levels since starches are where you body gets its energy from.
I read the book that goes with this and it actually suggests that you don't exercise..... I assume that this is because of the lack of energy that you have.
Finally, as soon as I started eating starches again, I was back to my original weight within a few days!!!!

If you are going to stick to the second phased of the diet, long term, then this shouldn't be a problem, but don't underestimate how difficult the diet is to stick to......
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.....

i lost 23 pounds on this diet in just the last 2 months...i am now happy with my weight and i am just trying to maintain it...you can never go back to the high carb diet that you were on without changing some other factors in your life or you will just put the weight right back on. When i started eating some carbs last week, i (of course) included only reasonable amounts of carbs (no pasta yet, no white bread yet) and i stepped up my running routine. So far i have not lost anymore weight, but i have not gained any back yet either. It is important not to be hungry when you are on this diet, you can snack on peanuts or cashews (in moderation) and meat and cheese...
I recommend this diet to get you started with weight loss because you can see the results right away and you are not constantly starving. On the other hand, many other doctors feel that depriving your body of such an important substance has other, detrimental effects. Good Luck.

I've tried a modified version of this diet for bodybuilding.. BodyOpsus written by Dan Duchain.. and the Ketogentic(sp?) Diet by Lyle Mcdonald..
it works.. but its a complete yo-yo diet.. at some point your going to have carbs again.. and when you do.. its hard to stop.
at least thats my experience.
Ive found for me.. modifying carb intake.. and the kind of carbs works better because i can stick to that diet year round.
Complex carbs that are low on the glycemic index.. (brown rice, corn tortillas, wheat bread, oatmeal) instead of simple sugar carbs (soda, syrup, most cereals).
6 meals a day.. small meals spaced out throughout the day helps speed up your metabolism.. its hard to fit in.. i usually shoot for 4-5.
and tapering the carbs throughout the day.. i'll have 50carbs for breakfast.. 30.. at lunch.. 10 snack.. 0 dinner. (protien shake-I recommend Isopure.. taste pretty good just don't get strawberry., bar-Myoplex lowcarb-3carbs a bar, or egg whites-Egg beaters is just as good and no cracking.)
but then again i haven't had a gym membership in months.. so don't listen to me.
