IMAX 3D special effects are awesome and the acting was great. However the plot is overtly predicable and drenched in mind numbing political correctness. meh

Showcase for the latest in special effects for sure. But I only care to see it again when mystery science theater provides the dialog.

I was 8 when Star Wars was released and I remember feeling like a whole new world was opened with that movie.

Yesterday I took my 9 year old and his friend to see Avatar in 3D. I had the same feeling of awe. And although both kids really enjoyed the movie, I could tell that, because most kids nowadays are so used to CGI and 3D, they weren't as impressed as I.

Awesome movie.

[QUOTE=Elistan,Dec 15 2009, 07:40 PM] Based on not having seen the movie, my opinion is:
Cliched story.
Cliched dialog.
Cliched visuals.

No idea about the acting quality.

The quality of the visuals are reportedly very good, but that's not enough to make up for the issues.

Then this'll blow your mind:
Nov 24, Rex Leo hadn't seen the movie, but had an opinion on it.
Dec 4, same for tantheman.
Dec 5, MMM.PWR.
Dec 6, triman54.
Dec 6, speedjunkie-ap1 was sick because of the movie, yet hadn't seen it.
Dec 14, Vadster hadn't seen the movie, but had an opinion on the CGI.
Etc.

Are you really that surprised that people have opinions on movies they've never seen, based on the previews and reviews? How do you pick which movies you go see - randomly walk into theaters? After all, if you have no different opinion on what's out there, one movie is just the same as another until you see it, right?

My thoughts on the movie haven't changed, now that the movie has been released - the reviews I've read have reinforced my opinions. Great visuals, lackluster writing. As 8D_In_Trunk said "The Cameron taketh away - I've sharted better dialogue."

Send me twenty bucks of your own money and I'll happily check it out. I've actually thought about seeing it for a matinee, but will probably just wait to rent it.

I checked it out in IMAX 3D and was/still am totally floored by it. . .this movie deserves to be seen in that format. I'm not sure I've ever seen a more visually stunning movie. The story is predictable but far from a deal breaker in terms of being able to enjoy the movie, in my opinion.

No no no. . . I saw it Friday, and I still stand behind the idea that I have in fact, sharted better dialogue, especially in the last third of the movie.

It was okay, with the understanding that the dialogue doesn't need to be heady and cerebral (and probably shouldn't), but the last third of it turned into "Pandora, F_CK YEAH!" and pulled every damn cliche out of the book. Moreover, this drivel was delivered so ham-fisted, I bet even Tom Cruise clenched up.

Ferngully + Fifth Element + Team Pandora: Native Police + Bright Shiny Colors = Avatar

Thank you, drive through.
