in the director's cut's ending, ashton's character watches the film where his mom was about to give birth. he then transforms himself back to that point where he was still in his mom's womb. in there, he strangles himself with the umbillical birth and dies, and thus was never born. as a result, amy smart's character and his brother went to live with their mom when their parents seperated, and so amy smart's character was never molested by her father, and her brother didn't develop into the bitter and corrupted individual that he otherwise had become. amy smart's character eventually happily marries some guy and his brother lived a productive and possitive life. the other fat kid, since he had not planted the explosive and watch a baby get killed, he did not become traumatized and so ended up living a happy and productive life as well. lastly, his mom eventually had a baby and supposedly lived happily ever after. this was all tied up with the part of the movie (i don't know if it was in the theatrical cut) where ashton and his mom goes to a fortune teller, and the fortune teller tells ashton that he does not belong here because he does not have a soul--that he was never meant to be here. her mom later confesses to ashton that he was her third pregnancy and that the 2 before him were stillborns.

WOW.... WOW.... WOW.... WOW....

In the theatrical, his mom doesnt give birth, they never see a fortune teller, and the mom never confessed anything. ONE QUESTION: why did amy smart and bro go live with mom instead of dad? What changes that?

amy smarts choice to live with her father was because she had always had a crush on ashton, and wanted to be close to him despite what she had to endure with her dad. since in the director's cut ending, ashton was never born, amy smart ended up choosing to live with her mom instead and so was never traumatized by her experiences with her dad.

AMAZING, amazing film. Probably Kutcher's finest moment on celluloid, and right up there with The Village as the best of 2004 IMO.

I loved it as well. And was very suprised that Kucher could do a serious role so well.

I watched this last night and thought it was a great film. However, I didn't realise there were 2 endings. I watched the directors cut. Can someone tell me what happens in the theatrical ending then?

In the threatrical release he goes back to the first time he met the girlfriend and tells her never to talk to him again. That makes her decide to live with her mom and so they never meet again. THey randomly pass each other on the street as adults but don't know each other.

I thought it was a very impressive film as well. I only watched the director's cut though, not realizing the theatrical version was different.

I was also very impressed with Ashton Kutcher who was also the executive producer. He may seem annoying in that 70's show but he proved himself to be a versatile and talented actor in this movie. He's probably a really smart guy considering he has a degree in biochemical engineering. Plus the fact he's with DewMe More raises his stock value IMO.

I actually liked the theatrical ending better.....

I thought the baby in the womb thing was a little silly. Sure, he can go back in time while maintaining grown up intellect (note his extensive vocab as a 10 yr old as he bitches the dad out) But to be able to go back as a concious fetus and strangle yourself was too much......and the psychic gypsy thing was just soooo out of place from the rest of the movie.

The thought the passing in the street thing was much better.
