Elysium - 8/9/13
I loved District 9, and I like Matt Damon in action roles. The visuals/special effects look a lot like D9, which were awesome. This will be one I see in theaters.

I want to see it, but I doubt it will be when it is in theaters. Not because of what it is or who's in it, but because I always end up finding something else to do rather than go to the movies.
The story is a bit tired. The whole "divide between uber rich and the rest of us just left to kill each other over scraps" looks like it is pulled right from Obama ad.
I liked District 9 as an allegory of apartheid, but maybe some subject matter that does not pick some put-upon group, add some high tech weaponry and a couple explosions and wallah, you have the same movie. Perhaps he should just make political commercials instead, then I don't have to pay $10 to see the same transparent message.
Although, I would bet it is better than most of what has come out this summer. ugh.

Got to see this opening day (thank you employer/corporate generosity). After having seen Pacific Rim: I realized my matinee/big sci-fi canister was loaded.
Elysium was no Pacific Rim, BUT:
All-in-all; Good, not great. If you have a large enough screen and sound system at home, you may not feel cheated by renting/streaming.
Elysium was no Pacific Rim, BUT:
- Matt Damon turns in a good performance by getting the f@#k out of the way of a relatively basic character.
- Jodie Foster is alright. Once again, she doesn't add, but neither subtracts, from the part of Delacourt.
- The heavy ("Kruger") is kinda cool, but I felt like there was something missing; like if this were a book, they'd have put more of his backstory in there or some such.
- The effects are pretty solid.
- The design language in both worlds is pretty good: there were a bunch of little quirks that your eye catches that adds depth to the world the director created.
- The actual crux of the plot is a bit silly, but the story of getting to the resolution is alright.

Loved District 9 and knew I would love this, and I did.
Action was good, SFX were very good.
Trunkie makes some good points - Matt Damon was solid, nothing amazing, same with Jodie Foster. She did a good job as a heartless politician that you could easily hate.
Kruger was so cool - but again like Trunkie said - needs a backstory. Prob would have felt out of place to put anythign in there, but even a tidbit would have helped explain him. He was definitely cool and his South African accent was hilarious. My wife said "what the hell , that guy is super weird", but since he is the main character from district 9 his accent didn't surprise me. However his character did, he's a total 180 from his character in District 9, he's a ruthless assassin dog, and he brings me to my final point.
Sci-fi weapons, this movie delivered. In this day and age there aren't that many cool ideas or visuals with "future tech wepaons". He has an awesome force field that you glimpse in the trailer. The gun Matt Damon had during the heist was cool as well. To top it off, Kruger had lots of fun toys to play with like drones etc.
If you like sci fi and action, no reason not to see it.
If you liked District 9 and haven't seen this - you suck haha

FINALLY saw it. Yeah it takes me awhile...
I didn't see any need for a back story on Kruger.
Kinda like Boba Fett in ESB
he's a bad person, it doesn't matter why - just take it for it is. Bad Ass Bad Guy.
