There is an old PBS documentary series for stream called "Carrier" that I really liked. You have to invest lots of time into it and see it through until the end but it gives you a pretty interesting window into the lives of kids in the NAVY and what their daily life is and the dedication most of them have. I really liked it but am predisposed to, I did not serve but really enjoy the military docs.

For something that had Mel Gibson's money, it isn't completely neurotic. . . rather, very well done.

. . . and yes, there is a time commitment, but it's in hour-long chunks.

Pulling up my full "Watch it Again" List, here are the off-Hollywood movies I'd recommend:
8 1/2 (This is not obscure though)
Amandla! - HIGHLY recommended if you're a music lover
Shoot The Piano Player
Solaris (The original)
A Boy and His Dog
The Experiment (Germanicized treatment of the Stanford Prison Experiment - this is GOOD!)
Ichi The Killer
Pollock (One of Ed Harris' best)
Cannibal! The Musical - (Parker and Stone's FIRST movie)
