Superman Returns
Saw it last nite at IMAX. No other way to see this movie IMO. Sound and picture quality is impeccable. The 3D scenes were a nice bonus too.
Overall, I'd have to say that this one was just as good as, if not better than, the gold standard for comic book movies (Batman Begins). Routh's performance is dead on. He IS Superman. And yes, there could've been more action sequences, but that's never been Singer's style. IMO, the action scenes that DID make it into the film were incredibly shot and choreographed. Quite simply, Singer outdid himself.
This is hands down the best movie I've seen this year. Quite possibly the best superhero flick ever. Don't waste your time seeing it in a regular theater. See it at IMAX, where it was meant to be seen. You won't regret it...

For the people who watched it, do you think it's better to watch the old school superman movies before watching this one?
I saw this a couple days ago and I was pleasantly surprised as well. I think it did a good job of a couple things:
1) using a mechanism that bridges the gap between the last movies and this one(I had to go check on a thing)
2) linked this movie to the past(Marlon Brando excerpts were a nice touch)
3) reintroducing superman to the generation that hasn't been exposed
4) rekindled the "relationship" with Lois
5) left the book open for the inevitable followups
6) accomodated technology into the film(read logo made of CF on his chest... hahah)
This Clark Kent wasn't quite as dorky as our late wheelchaired hero, which I can take or leave.
I thought his voice was exceptional... firm like a police officer, but still soft in delivery... this was my largest lasting memory.
Kate Bosworth as Lois was an upgrade from Kidder as well.
Keeping the original John Williams theme music was a good move as well. What's superman without the theme song... it actually made me go track down the "Can You Read My Mind" mp3 by Maureen Mcgovern. This dual incorporation of theme music isn't gonna win the new guy(don't remember the name of the guy who did this score) any awards, but its nostalgic. Williams did this with Star Wars as well with the main theme and the Binary Sunset song.
Some of the scenes were a bit drawn out, and it was a long-ish movie. I think they prolly could have cut out 15-25 minutes and still kept it all intact. I would expect the follow-ups to be a bit more streamlined. Kinda like X-men had to backfill vs X2/X3 were more along the lines of seeing how many other plot lines could be incorporated.

There has been one thing bothering me about this movie. From what I can see, there is no way that this movie should have cost $300 million dollars to make! The only expensive thing that I see that would have cost some money is the plane shot. Does anyone else have any other ideas to what scenes in the film would have cost so much?

Maybe you comic book fans can explain this.... HE is the man of steel, how does that translate to his outfit?
Anyone seen Mallrats? where Jason Lee talks about how Superman would make a woman explode because her uterus wouldn't be strong enough?
I guess for 100g's.. the outfit better be bulletproof.
... kinda reminds me of the incredibles and Edna Mode
and thats still only $1M accounted for... $279M is still alot to be floating around.
I bit the bullet last week and saw Superman Returns. I think that overall it was a good movie, and the guy who plays Superman did a good job.
I felt that the movie seemed to drag on though in certain parts of the movie and that it could have been a little shorter. Either that or they could have put a few more action scences into it. Maybe I was expecting too much with all the hype that I was hearing about it. Overall, it was a good movie, but not the best movie of all time like some made it out to be.

.... keeping in the Kevin Smith theme (Dogma fans specifically)... did anyone feel like they depicted Superman as a Super Jesus like character? I think there was a scene where he was floating in space, almost like on the crucifix, and there was sort of like a resurection theme in part of the movie.
.... any thoughts?
