I like the idea of staying somewhere closer to the Dragon.

i had a great time and would do it again. the 2 things we could do to improve the last run would be to stay closer, and drive more

The downside of staying closer is that we all have to drive somewhere to eat (and drink ). I'm guessing the dining choices nearby the dragon aren't suited for groups of 40-60 (or more), nor as diverse. The Wyndham was ok (the car washing and blocked off parking were nice touches that many hotels won't accomodate), and being within walking/stumbling distance to the restaurants and whatnot was nice. Personally I think some of the group photo time was a bigger waste then the 30-45 minute commute to the "head". The stop at the foothills entry was good, and the other overlook where theGeneral took a group photo was fine, but we also stopped at the head and numerous other times - not necessarily "wasted" time but time that could have been spent driving. Each stop was almost an hour, and the group photo was longer. Also, we could bypass the 30+ car convoy (gotta do it once...) most of the times - Mack's maps were easy to follow and smaller groups could leave for the Dragon as they were ready to go in the morning.

Another benefit of staying in Knox again is that we could dedicate one day to scenic cruising (saturday probably) - foothills parkway, dragon, fontana dam, cherohala skyway, etc. The 2nd day could be insane dragon fun (friday, fewer cars/bikes)(I might advise against insane cherohala fun after the motorcycle incident). The more adventurous co-pilots could come along for the insane fun, the less adventurous could do the shopping mall thing in Knox (or whatever floats their boats). Then everyone would go on the scenic cruising day.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on this before staying closer to the Dragon was overwhelmingly favored.

On the flipside, you all know me - Give me 2 more shots at the dragon and I'll be a happy camper!
