Dear Ron:

When a company has a promotion where if you guess the closest to the number of m&m's in a gumball machine, you get the gumball machine and m&m's..... and there were no other posted rules at that time.....

If you pick up said gumball machine to see how far the m&m's go down the tube...... and then measure the gumball machine (almost a globe)... and then do a quick calculation... radius * radius * radius * 4 / 3 times 3.1416 to get the volume of the gumball machine...

Then take each m&m at .637 cubic cm..... and then figure there is 32% air space..... to determine the number of m&m's....

deduct thickness of glass
7.5 = radius in cm
421.875 = radius * radius * radius
1.333333333 = *4 / 3
562.5
3.1416
1767.15 cubic cm
0.636 m&m cubic cm
2778.537736 # of m&m's
0.32 air %
1889.40566 total number of m&m's

Is that cheating?

Now they have a big sign up near the gumball machine that you cannot touch, pick it up, measure it, etc.....

Signed,
Wanting some m&m's in Cincy

ps... do you think the company I work for (the one with the promtion) will fire me over this?

Dear Wanting some M & M's
Remind me to NOT let you in the Poker Run!

Not sure if it is cheating though. I guess it depends on how anal your company is. The fact they felt obligated to put up a sign may be an indication of trouble on the horizon. But your calculations are short a few factors that could significantly alter the outcome.

1. Is the person organizing this honest?

2. Is the person counting the m & m’s competent? A few miscounted chocolate tabs of joy, and you loose.

3. Is the person organizing this a conniving smart-ass? Did he throw a bag of skittles in to throw everybody off?

4. Is the organizer Sicilian?

Good Luck,

Yours in Chaos Theory

PS. They are probably laced with poison anyway!

Nope....

There were like 1250 and I was at 1190.

The guy who won looked up how many M&M's were in a bag and used 2 bags worth... he was at 1220 or something like that.

One other guy was 7 over... sop he was disqualified.
