Dear Ron,

I think it is time to ask...Is there really a Santa Claus?

Santa and his avatars are pervasive throughout western culture. Certainly, even if only a metaphor, symbol or archetype, he strikes a common chord.

For me, Santa rides the winds of good will to all of us, regardless of our differences.

You will have to decide if Santa is instantiated as a jolly fat man in red, some other representation of St. Nick or solely as an ideal for each of us to aspire to emulate.

Regardless, Happy Holidays, all the holidays of the winter solstice, to all.

It'll be the 10's until 2013 and then it will be the teens.

It confused me too when I was twelve and couldn't call myself a teenager.

'cause I love you guys and I've got an iPhone so any waiting room or train ride is prime time on the "Ask Ron" thread.

A perennial question brought about by changes in our modern lifestyle.

There was no question about blue food before we had fire and other artificial illumination that allowed us to see by light sources warmer (in the color sense) than the sun.

When viewed by the bluer light of the sun, blueberries are clearly blue. No less an authority than Crayola chose the RGB values of 124,0,252 for their 1994 Blueberry scented crayon. Purple is generally considered to be an even mix between red and blue and, as Crayola tells us, the blue value is only 8 bits from pure blue. If you are looking for a color of 0,0,255 as your only acceptable blue, you'll only see it on a color-corrected monitor. It doesn't exist in nature. But then, neither to 255,0,0 or 0,255,0 so we'd have to say there's no blue sky or green grass in nature either.

It's only when we started looking at blueberries by incandescent that emphasizes the warmer colors toward the red end of the spectrum that blueberries look purple. And it's only the extension of our active day with artificial lights that we acquired time to worry about the question.

Yours in shades of blue,
