Dear Ron:
Why was I lied to during my schooling years.
I was told repeatedly that there were nine planets in our solar system.
In the last few years, I am being told that there are only eight.
What gives?

The Scientific Method is designed to produce rational results with incomplete knowledge using imperfect minds and tools. That's why scientific knowledge is continually questioned and refined. It can look chaotic and random from the outside but the Method is one of the most beautiful inventions of humanity.

Dear Ron:
Woke up in the middle of the night with some questions that just wouldn't let me fall back to sleep.
I need your help so I can sleep well tonight!
1. Why are moths attracted to light?
2. Why Were neckties invented?
3. Why do women talk more than men do, but can’t read maps as well as men?
4. Why do people often wake up just before the alarm?
5. Was the 1969 moon landing a fake?
Thank goodness for people like you that help fight insomnia!

- Phototaxis. Moths probably use light for navigation and evolved before artificial lighting. Use a yellow bulb. Their eyes are not sensitive to that wavelength.
- Because Parisians thought Croatian mercenaries returning from the Thirty Years war looked dashing.
- Because the areas of the brain devoted to communication, memory and emotion are better developed in women.
- Because, despite atrophy from dependence on clocks, we actually have a pretty good sense of time. Your anticipation of waking wakes you up.
- I could tell you, but you wouldn't believe me.

- Possibly as long ago as the Han dynasty but for certain in the later half of 19th century Japan. As a selection method like flipping a coin.
- The Internet is a system of linked networks carrying many different protocols. The HTTP/HTML protocols underlying the World Wide Web are a subset of the larger Internet.
- 6th century China. Leaves, wool, grass, lace, hay, hemp, stone, sponge on a stick, sand, rags, moss, ferns, water, maize, snow, seaweed, corncob, etc, etc, etc. The rich might use the neck of a well-downed goose while the poor used their hands. Personally, I think the parts of the world that use bidets have it right.
