Recommendation for a good scotch
Looking to get a bottle of scotch for my neighbor, who has been generous enough to lend me his trap, come kill the caught skunks (2 so far), and take away the dead critters!
I know he is a scotch drinker, so I'd like to repay him with a bottle of scotch and a box of hollow point 22 rounds (which I already have)!
Recommendations?
If I have to pay more for the scotch.... I'm OK with that also.

If he takes away dead skunks there is a good chance his sense of taste and smelling is gone. I would say any rot gut will do. Just transfer it to a good looking bottle!

I lean towards Islay malts, heavy peat.
Lagavulin 16 is between $60-$80 depending on where you are, and is delicious. The Distiller's Editions are about $120 and not worth it IMO. They basically age it for a couple extra years in a cask of whatever the distiller decides; the last one was sherry casks. It's a tiny bit sweeter, and the nose is a little smoother.
Laphroaig 10 is pretty reasonable at about $50 (it was $25 on base in CT! $25! A steal, I tell you...), and probably 75-90% as good as Lagavulin. I haven't tried the older offerings.
I just picked up Ardbeg 10, and I'm not hugely impressed. It was also about $50, but it doesn't have nearly the legs of the above two. It's lighter in color and, well, thinner. The upside is the nose is way smoother, with less smoke domination. I'd like to try their Corryvreckan or Uigeadail.
Barring all that, JW Gold is, IMO, the best balanced and most reasonably priced of blended Whiskys *runs away*.
