Hey Dave, guess you are staying at the Econo Lodge?
I'm trying to make appointments in Harrisonburg, then Lynchburg, and then I'd get to Back of the Dragon in time to make two runs before dinner Tuesday night and could join you for the drive to FDR @ 7:30am Weds morning.
I was working on getting there Weds to do Devil's Triangle on Thursday but now that drive isn't until mid-afternoon. That's OK, will be nice to have time to get moved in and wash the car, etc.
I'll let you know.
Thanks,
Stuart

Hi folks!
My first time for this event, 2nd time on the Dragon. I've been wanting to do this for years, but something always came up and I couldn't make it. Can't wait to get up there!
Driving up from Charleston, SC, now I need to decide on the route to take. I'd like to take advantage of the more twisty roads on the way, so if anyone has any advice, please let me know.
Thanks and looking forward to meeting everyone.
Jay

I start by putting in the FDR address (300 Woods Drive, Fontana) in google. Then click on Maps, then on the Directions arrow.
Put in your home in the top spot so you get basic directions (352 5:19). Click on options, click avoid highways, avoid tolls and see what you get (345 7:26)
Look along the path for parks and scenic drives along the way. There isn't much I see along the way that would be worth it until the end.
Keep in mind you will be on smaller roads, going through every small town on the way and be subjected to a LOT of local police, sheriffs, patrol, country cops and they all have a radar or laser unit and are raising revenue for their town so you have to weigh the extra time and risk with if there is actually a scenic reason or a food reason to do it that way.
You could go a bit north of the no-highways route on 702 from Saluda along the little river/lake. After you cross into SC you could get on 28 a bit earlier, probably 23 and 28 are similar though.
You'll end up going through Franklin which is the destination of the Friday lunch drive.

Consider heading to Suches and heading north from there. Lots of good roads around Helen GA as well. A more direct route would be head to Wallhala and head north on 28 until you get to Fontana.
