Default Accident

MANATEE --Two people were injured, one critically, when the car they were riding in went off the road, throwing them from the vehicle.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Chris Miller said Zachary Joseph McMines, 20, of Pinellas Park was driving a 2005 Honda convertible over the speed limit on Palm View Drive at 28th Avenue East in Palmetto when he went off the road.

The car hit a power pole, flipped and landed upside down, throwing McMines and his passenger, Nicole Lee Monahan, 20, of Bradenton, to the ground, according to Miller.

McMines landed about 20 feet from the vehicle. Monahan landed closer, but only after flying through the trees. Spanish moss littered the ground of the crash and pieces of grass were thrown on the roof of a near-by home.

Neighbors called 911 when they saw the crash.

Michael Aycue, 23, of Palmetto heard the loud boom from his home next door and ran outside. He said McMines ran over to Monahan.

"She was barely breathing and he kept telling her to wake up," he said.

Monahan was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg in critical condition. McMines was taken by ambulance to Bayfront in serious condition, officials said.

The accident happened about 10:42 a.m.

Were they not wearing seat belts? If they were, that is terrifying.

doubt seat belts where being used otherwise they would not have been thrown from the car and would probably not have been as severly hurt .

I really don't understand why people don't wear seatbelts. Seriously. WEAR THEM PEOPLE. Hope they come out alright.

That's so sad and sadder still, avoidable. I hope they both pull through with a quick recovery.
