That case is one in a million though. The odds are against you if you don't wear a seatbelt.

Sounds like someone took his Hagee pills. Maybe then again the suggestion is that these people ought to get Darwin awards. Either way, are you suggesting that they got what was coming to them?

Who or what "shall punish the stupid"?

Not wearing seatbelts increases the chances of a serious injury or fatality in a collision, but who gets to chose who is stupid and therefore deserving of being punished? Why do some people drink and drive and never have an accident? Do only dumb drunks kill people when they get behind the wheel? Did the hundreds people who died in New Orleans and the thousands who were left homeless get punished when Katrina hit because they were stupid? Did the 70,000 or so who died in the rubble after the earthquake hit in China this year die because they were stupid? Or maybe only the lucky ones with high I.Q.'s got to survive. Does cancer only strike imbeciles? Maybe you believe that the 9/11 hijackers were some divine instruments intended to cull mankind of the least intellectually suited for surivival.

Then again, maybe like so many young people, these youngsters are guilty of no more than thinking that they were invincible, that nothing could ever happen to them or those around them. I know that, when I was in my twenties, I behaved more recklessly than I do now. I remember in particular one event during my youth which stands out with vivid clarity. I did something stupid, and a friend didn't judge me like some sword of righteousness. He said, "Now, you need a friend."

If you are going to do something stupid, don't expect sympathy from me. If I were to drive my car into a brick wall going 100 mph would you all say not to judge because you don't know the situation. I was going 100 mph! That is stupidity. I would expect no sympathy.

When I say that the stupid will be punished I mean that they will be punished by their stupid actions.

Thumbs down

not wearing your seatbelts or helmets does increase your chances of getting hurt in the event of an accident, BUT... it does nothing to swing the strings of fate, regarding getting into an accident, closer to the proverbial blade....

can you tell I am a fatalist?

sad story....I hope they recover as best they can.

Buckle UP

I am not sure how many of you have been following the news locally (Tampa area) this week but on Hwy 60 in Plant City there was a 2 car accident involving 4 Bloomingdale HS kids, 2 boys in a small pick up & 2 girls in Jeep Cherokee both vehicles were heading east bound and somehow collided and went off the road.

NONE of them were wearing seat belts, both drivers were killed and the passangers are in critical condition. Such a tradegy, they were all under 17 years old, it was after midnight (remember what your Dad told you nothing good happens after midnight), and the girl driving the Jeep was 15 years old on a learners permit with a 16 year old passanger. I don't want to kick someone in their darkest hour but what were her parents thinking?

The young man who was killed is the son of a Tampa Police Captain and was cited previously for not wearing a seat belt.

Here is a link to the article: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/aug/06/me...g-lives-marked/

Seat belts save lives, I just don't understand why people don't get that. My heart goes out to the family's, I can't imagine the pain they are going thru, God's Peace to them.

Sorry Rob, but free will dictates the exact moment when the lack of blood flow causes the brain to starve of oxygen. It's a matter of physics, I am sure you are aware of how seat belts work so I'll spare the lesson, but I won't spare the stats!

2006

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the following seat belt statistics:

* The NHTSA estimates that 15,383 lives were saved by seat belts in 2006. From 1975 to 2006, seat belts have saved the lives of 226,567 people. As car safety improves, more lives are saved.
* Of those thrown completely out of their vehicle in a car crash, 75 percent were killed. Only one percent of all people totally ejected from their cars had on a set belt at the time of the crash. Over 30 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
* In 2006, 42,642 people were killed in car accidents. The NHTSA was able to gather seat belt data on 30,251 of the 42,642 car occupants that died in car crashes. Nearly 56 percent, or 16836 people, of the 30,251 with available restraint information were not wearing seat belts at the time of the fatal auto accident.
* Research found that 7064 people killed in car wrecks during the daytime were not wearing safety belts. Of those killed in nighttime car accidents, 9,615 were not wearing seatbelts.

2002

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the following seat belt stats:

* In 2002, 43,005 people died in traffic accidents. Seat belt data was available for 32,598 of those involved in fatal car crashes. Of that number, 19,103 were not wearing seat belts.
* 4,200 lives could be saved each year if 90% of the U.S. population wore seat belts.
* Fatalities and accidents involving those not wearing seat belts cost the U.S. approximately $20 billion per year. Of that cost, 74% of the tab is paid for by the public.
* One out of four Americans still doesn't wear a seat belt.
